Measure the rise, then multiply

Measure the total height you need to climb — floor to top of the threshold or step. For someone self-propelling, the residential target is roughly 1 foot of ramp per inch of rise (a 1:12 slope). A 6-inch step wants about 6 feet; a small 3-inch threshold, about 3 feet. With a helper pushing, you can go a little steeper; going down a too-steep ramp is where the real danger lives.
