The ad shows someone stumbling, catching themselves, and a calm voice saying help is on the way before they've even hit the floor. That's not what these devices do, and it's worth being precise about the gap, because the gap is exactly where families end up disappointed with a product that was never broken — just oversold.
What "fall detection" actually detects
Fall-detection pendants use an accelerometer to recognize the motion pattern of a body falling and then impacting the ground — a specific, fast acceleration signature. They detect the fall after it happens, the same way an airbag detects a crash after impact, not before. They do not predict an unsteady step, they do not catch someone mid-stumble, and they do not prevent anything. What they do is shorten the time between "something happened" and "someone knows" — which matters enormously if the person can't reach a phone, and matters not at all if the fall never happens in the first place.

Subscriptions: the part the box doesn't emphasize
Nearly every monitored system — the ones that actually call for help — requires an ongoing monthly monitoring fee; the hardware price on the box is rarely the full cost. If someone else is usually nearby, a subscription-free in-home pager solves the same underlying problem — someone not knowing help is needed — for a fraction of the cost and complexity. Either way, the device is not a substitute for the fixes that stop the fall itself: start with the bathroom fix order and the room-by-room checklist, because the best fall response is the fall that didn't happen.
