Do suction grab bars actually hold?

The three ways the seal dies

Texture breaks it before it starts: matte, slate, stone-look, and satin finishes hold the rim on micro-peaks, air walks underneath, and no vacuum ever forms. Grout breaks it geometrically: the joint is porous and sits lower than the tile, so a cup placed across it has a permanent leak channel. And time breaks the rest: even a good seal on good glaze bleeds down over days, which is why every manufacturer tells you to re-press the cups — an instruction almost nobody follows on day 40.
What the return rate is telling you
Amazon flags the best-selling suction bar in this category as a frequently returned item. We read that flag the same way you should: thousands of buyers expected fall protection, got a balance aid, and sent it back. The product didn't lie about its rating — the shelf placement did. Sold as what it is, to a bathroom that has the glaze for it, the same device is a legitimate $12 steadying point.
